LEYLANDS
There are three different crosses among species that are
sometimes referred to as Leylands. These three trees have different father trees
crossed to the same mother tree, Alaska-Cedar or Nootka Falsecypress. The influence of the mother’s characteristics
dominates all three species, so they look very similar to their mother, the
Alaska-Cedar.
OVENSII CYPRESS
Father is Mexican Cypress.
A vigorous form, more open than Leyland,
and with stiffer branches. It produces
large flattened sprays of drooping dark green foliage. In Georgia trials it is the fastest
growing, averaging 3’ per year. It is
an excellent Christmas tree, lasting two months or longer without drying, if
cared for properly and kept watered at all times.
